Itinerary

  • Day 1: TOKYO

Arrival at Narita or Haneda International Airport. After immigration formalities, to activate your Japan Rail Pass, go to any JR Group Exchange Office. These are located in most Japanese airports, as well as in major train stations throughout the country. Once your Japan Rail Pass is activated, you can use it to travel to central Tokyo. Accommodation at a hotel of your choice.

Note: If you land at Narita Airport, you can reach central Tokyo (Tokyo, Shinagawa, Shinjuku, and Ikebukuro stations) using the Haruka Express. If you land at Haneda Airport, you can travel on the Tokyo Monorail to Hamamatsucho Station.

  • Day 2: TOKYO

Free day to explore Tokyo on your own. We recommend visiting Meiji Shrine, the Imperial Palace Plaza, Senso-ji Temple, and Nakamise Street, famous for its traditional shops and local atmosphere. Overnight at a hotel of your choice.

Note: Transportation within the city can be done by subway and JR urban lines, partially covered by the Japan Rail Pass. Both options incur an additional cost.

  • Day 3: TOKYO - HAKONE - TOKYO

Free day on which we recommend an excursion to Hakone using the Japan Rail Pass. The journey is made by Shinkansen bullet train from Tokyo to Odawara and then by local transport to Hakone. Once there, we recommend a stroll along Lake Ashi, a visit to Hakone-jinja Shrine, and a visit to the Hakone Open Air Museum, all while enjoying the natural scenery and views of Mount Fuji. Return to Tokyo by train, again using the Japan Rail Pass. Overnight at a hotel chosen by the client.

  • Day 4: TOKYO - KYOTO - NARA - KYOTO

Transfer independently to the station to take the Shinkansen bullet train to Kyoto, using your Japan Rail Pass. To make the most of the day, we recommend continuing on to Nara, using JR trains included in your Japan Rail Pass. There you can visit Todai-ji Temple and the famous deer park. Return to Kyoto using your Japan Rail Pass. Overnight at a hotel of your choice.

  • Day 5: KYOTO

Free day to discover Kyoto on your own. Our recommendation for this day is to visit Sanjusangendo Temple, Fushimi Inari Shrine, Kinkaku-ji Temple, and the Arashiyama Bamboo Grove. Transportation can be arranged by JR local trains, buses, or subway depending on the area you wish to visit, at an additional cost. Overnight at a hotel of your choice.

  • Day 6: KYOTO - KANAZAWA

Departure for Kanazawa using the Japan Rail Pass. The journey is made by JR Thunderbird express train to Tsuruga, connecting to the Hokuriku Shinkansen bullet train to Kanazawa. Upon arrival, we recommend visiting Omicho Market, Higashichaya district, and Kenrokuen Garden. Overnight at a hotel chosen by the client.

  • Day 7: KANAZAWA - SHIRAKAWAGO - TAKAYAMA - GERO/GIFU

Departure for Shirakawago by bus with the Nohi Bus and Hokutetsu Bus lines (extra cost applies) (*). There you can see the traditional Gassho-zukuri style houses. Continue to Takayama, also by bus. We recommend exploring the Kamisannomachi historic district and visiting Yatai Kaikan. Afterwards, transfer by JR Express train to Gero/Gifu using the Japan Rail Pass. Overnight at the hotel or ryokan chosen by the client.

(*) For the regular bus journey from Kanazawa to Takayama, we recommend purchasing a single ticket that allows a stop in Shirakawago.

(**) In Gero, we recommend staying at a ryokan, where you can enjoy a traditional onsen (hot spring bath).

Departure for Nagoya on the JR Wide View Hida train using the Japan Rail Pass. Upon arrival, we recommend visiting the Toyota Memorial Museum of Technology and Industry, Nagoya Castle, and Honmaru Goten Palace. Overnight at a hotel of your choice.

  • Day 9: NAGOYA - ISE - TOBA

Departure from Nagoya to Ise using JR trains, although a supplement to the Japan Rail Pass is required. Continue to your hotel in Toba using local transport (at an extra cost). Overnight at a hotel of your choice.
  • Day 10: TOBA - ISE - KUMANO - NACHI KATSUURA

  • Day 11: TANABE - KUMANO PATH - TANABE

Our suggestion for this free day is to take the shortest route on the Kumano Kodo trail, a 7 km hike that can be done in half a day. This route leads through forest paths and past isolated mountain villages. Its main points of interest include: Hosshinmon-ōji, known as the "Gate of Enlightenment," which marks the main entrance to the sacred Kumano Hongū Taisha grounds; Mizunomi Village, a small, secluded mountain village with excellent views and tea plantations; and Fushiogami Lookout, the spot where ancient pilgrims knelt in awe upon first seeing the Grand Shrine. and Kumano Hongū Taisha, one of the three great shrines on the route, famous for its cypress thatched roofs and for housing the Otorii, the world's largest torii gate.

Note: The route begins at Hosshinmon-ĹŤji, and to get there from Kii-Tanabe Station, you must take a public bus (not included in the Japan Rail Pass) operated by Ryujin Bus.

Accommodation at the hotel or ryokan chosen by the client.

  • Day 12: TANABE - KOYASN

Take the JR Kuroshio Limited Express train from Kii-Tanabe Station to Wakayama Station. Then, take the Nankai Koya train (not included in the Japan Rail Pass) to Gokurakubashi Station. From there, take the ropeway up to Koyasan (additional cost applies). Once in Koyasan, we recommend visiting Kongobuji Temple, exploring a Buddhist monastery, and wandering through Okunoin Cemetery, one of the most spiritual places in Japan. Overnight at a hotel of your choice.

  • Day 13: KOYASAN - OSAKA

Take the cable car (at an extra cost) back to Gokurakubashi Station to continue by train (not included in the Japan Rail Pass) to Hashimoto. From there, you can use your Japan Rail Pass to continue to Osaka, changing trains at Wakayama Station. Overnight at a hotel of your choice.

Note: If your arrival time in Osaka allows, we recommend visiting the Floating Garden Observatory at the Umeda Sky Building, Osaka Castle Gardens, and the lively Dotonbori district this afternoon.

  • Day 14: OSAKA

If your departure airport in Osaka is Kansai Airport, you can use your Japan Rail Pass by taking the Haruka Express line to the airport.

Note: If you are departing from another airport, you will not be able to use your Japan Rail Pass.

JAPAN RAIL PASS

What is the JR Pass and who can use it?

  • It's a single ticket for unlimited travel on the JR rail network.
  • It's exclusively for foreign visitors.
  • It's offered in three durations: 7, 14, or 21 consecutive days.
  • There's also a Green Pass (first class) option, which offers more comfortable and spacious seats and superior service, ideal for peak seasons.

What's included and what's not included?

  • It includes: Shinkansen (bullet) trains, express, rapid, and local trains on the JR network, airport transfers (such as the Narita Express or Haruka Express), some JR bus lines, and the JR ferry to Miyajima.
  • Not included: Subways and city trams, express bus journeys, ferries operated by other companies (such as the Hakata to Busan ferry), or sleeper cars/private compartments on overnight trains without paying an extra fare.
  • Note regarding Nozomi and Mizuho lines: These are not fully included; pass holders must pay a special supplement to use them. You can use the Hikari or Sakura trains as an alternative at no additional cost.

Activation and Use

  • You must exchange your voucher (Exchange Order) for the physical pass at a JR Exchange Office (at airports or stations) within 3 months of purchase.
  • When exchanging, you must choose an activation date, which must be within 30 days of the exchange.
  • Exchange must be done in person by presenting your passport (with a tourist stamp) and the original voucher; Copies, photos, or third-party arrangements are not accepted.
  • Validity is calculated in consecutive days, not hours; the pass expires at midnight on the last day.
