Orchha

The capital of a renowned principality, Orchha is a palatial and fortified city located in the central Indian region of Bundelkhand, 15 kilometers from Jhansi. It sits on a now semi-arid plain on the banks of the Betwa River, a tributary of the Yamuna, which flows through the Orchhay Plateau. An oasis of tranquility, it is one of the most authentic destinations for cultural tourism in the country. The city is famous for its enormous palace-fortress situated on a temporary island in the Betwa River. The island is surrounded by a crenellated wall, and the palace-fortress complex comprises several buildings constructed at different times. Among these, the most notable are the Rajmandir (Royal Temple) and the Jahangir Mahal. Elsewhere in the city, there is an unusual array of temples and tombs, including the Chaturbhuj Temple, built upon a large stone platform.

Raj Mahal Palace, Orchha

Raj Mahal Palace, Orchha

The Raj Mahal, or “Palace of the Kings,” was built by Madhukar Shah between 1554 and 1591 and abandoned in 1783. It is one of the main palaces in the Orchha Fort complex and a major tourist attraction. It is notable for its Rajput-style architecture and soaring balconies. Its design is more austere compared to its newer neighbor, the Jahangir Mahal.
Lakshminarayan Temple

Lakshminarayan Temple

The Lakshmi Narayan Temple in Orchha is a 17th-century architectural and artistic gem, built by Bir Singh Deo, and renowned for its vibrant murals and the panoramic view of Orchha from its elevated terrace. It features a blend of styles, with Islamic influences and a base reminiscent of the Shri Yantra, with a hybrid structure incorporating cannon slits that served as both a temple and a fortress. Its walls and ceilings are adorned with intricate frescoes in shades of red and white, depicting scenes from daily life, mythology, and history, created using a special technique that makes the images appear to interact with the viewer. Despite being dedicated to Lakshmi, there is no statue of the goddess in the main sanctuary, adding to its air of mystery.
