The Brihadeeswarar Temple is the highlight of the city, with its imposing vimana tower and intricate stone reliefs depicting scenes from Hindu mythology. The city is a center of arts and crafts, known for its traditional art of Tanjore painting, which combines painting techniques with inlaid precious stones and gold. It is also the birthplace of the famous Indian classical dance form, Bharatanatyam, and is an important center of Carnatic classical music, here you can attend live dance and music performances at local temples and art academies.

Shiva Nathraja Shrine (Brihadeeshawarar Temple)

The Chidambaram Temple, located near the Kollidam River, in the state of Tamil Nadu, is dedicated to Shiva Nathraja and is one of the most relevant temples dedicated to this deity.Chidambaram is one of the main pilgrimage centers of Shaivism, as well as for Vishnuism, since it is one of the oldest temples in India. One of the five Sabha (ballrooms) of Nathraja, and the most famous, is the Kanaka Sabha (Golden Hall). It is also one of the panchabhoota sthalams that represent the five elements.Here is the oldest set of karana, the 108 dance movements of Nathraja, carved into the stone. They are the movements that give rise to the classical dances of India, described in the Nāṭya-śāstra. The temple complex, including the building dedicated to Vishnu, occupies 16 hectares. The temple has nine access gates, four of them located in the four cardinal points with 7-level pagodas.

Brihadeswara Temple

It is the main tourist attraction of Tanjore, both for tourists and for followers of the Hindu religion. It was built in the year 1010 AD. by the Rajaraja Cholan I. This temple, dedicated to the god Shiva, is one of the largest temples in South India. The Brihadeshwara temple stands out for its Dravidian architecture, typical of the area, which is characterized by pyramidal structures with sculptures and figures on the outside. Inside it there are paintings and murals.
