Java, located between Sumatra and Bali, is a volcanic island at the geographic and economic heart of Indonesia, home to more than half of the country's population. In the past, it was the center of powerful Hindu-Buddhist empires, such as Majapahit, and later of Islamic sultanates before Dutch colonization. Java is famous for its cultural and natural treasures, with ancient temples, towering volcanoes, and magnificent waterfalls.
Java's largest city is Jakarta, a modern and rapidly growing metropolis that is also the country's capital.
