It is one of the oldest capitals of Sri Lanka, known for its well-preserved ruins. The civilization that developed around this city was one of the largest in Asia. It is located 205 km north of the commercial capital Colombo, in the Anuradhapura district of the North Central province, Sri Lanka. In 1982 it was considered a World Heritage Site by UNESTO. Founded in the 4th century BC. C. it was the capital of the Kingdom of Anuradhapura until the beginning of the 9th century. During this period it was one of the most stable and enduring centers of political power in South Asia. Today this ancient city, sacred to Buddhism, whose surrounding monasteries cover an area of more than 40 km², is one of the largest archaeological sites in the world.
