Colombo

It is the most populated city in Sri Lanka, commercial capital and seat of Government. It is located on the western coast of the island. It is a vibrant city, full of life and with a mix of modern architecture, colonial buildings and ruins. Its name was given to it by the Portuguese colonizers in 1505. Because it is a large natural port and its strategic position on the sea trade routes that link the East and the West, merchants have known of its existence for more than 2,000 years. It was designated the country's capital when it was ceded to the British Empire in 1815 and maintained its capital status when the nation became independent in 1948. The central area of the city is home to most of Sri Lanka's corporate offices, restaurants and entertainment venues.

What to see in Colombo?

Galle Face Park

It is a 500-meter-long urban park located next to the sea, in the heart of the city. It was initially designed by the Dutch as a means of allowing their cannons to have a strategic line of fire against the Portuguese and extended over a much larger area than seen today. In 1856, Governor Sir Henry George Ward authorized the construction of a mile-long promenade. It was used for horse racing from 1820 until 1893, when it was moved to the racecourse and as a golf course. Currently it is the popular destination most used by the city's inhabitants. On December 25, 2016, it hosted the world's tallest artificial Christmas tree.

Viharamahadevi Park

It is the oldest and largest park in the city. It has fountains and water features, tropical trees, abundant birdlife and interesting buildings such as the Colombo City Hall, a neoclassical structure that bears a certain resemblance to the Capitol and was completed in 1928; the Vihara Maha Devi Park Open Air stadium, a venue for concerts and public events; a small zoo, a golden statue of Buddha and the Colombo Cenotaph and War Memorial, built in 1920 and dedicated to the men and women of ancient Ceylon killed during the two World Wars.
