Sumatra Island

Sumatra is the sixth largest island in the world, a haven of wild nature in Indonesia. Located in Southeast Asia, on the equator, west of Java and south of the Malay Peninsula, it is famous for its rugged tropical terrain, wildlife, and active volcanoes. It boasts a great diversity of fauna and is one of the few places where tigers, rhinos, elephants, and orangutans still coexist in the wild. Geographically, it is traversed by the Barisan mountain range and has numerous active volcanoes. Much of its territory is covered by rainforests, making it an adventure and nature tourism destination, ideal for those seeking an authentic experience. With lush jungles, wildlife, active volcanoes, the gigantic Lake Toba (the world's largest volcanic lake), and spectacular beaches for diving, such as on Weh Island, it offers trekking, local culture, and an immersive connection with nature.

What to see in Sumatra Island?

Bukit Lawang Jungle

The Bukit Lawang jungle, located about 86 km from Medan in North Sumatra, is the main access point to Gunung Leuser National Park. It is world-renowned for being home to one of the largest populations of wild Sumatran orangutans, with approximately 5,000 individuals in the area. The most popular activity in the area is orangutan, macaque, gibbon, and bird watching expeditions.Currently, the focus of activities in the area has shifted significantly towards sustainable and ethical tourism, prioritizing the conservation of this UNESCO World Heritage ecosystem.

Lumbini Park

The place commonly referred to as Lumbini Park is Lumbini Natural Park, known locally as Taman Alam Lumbini. It is a religious and natural park complex located in Berastagi, in the province of North Sumatra. Its main attraction is its majestic pagoda, nearly 47 meters tall, covered in gold paint and considered the second tallest replica of Shwedagon outside of Myanmar. The park features well-maintained gardens, elephant statues, and Burmese-style architecture. As it is a religious site, visitors should dress respectfully and remove their shoes before entering the temple. Smoking, eating, and drinking are prohibited within the complex.

Sipiso-piso waterfall

Sipiso Piso Waterfall is one of the tallest and most impressive waterfalls in Indonesia, with a height of approximately 120 meters. It is located in the Karo Regency, in northern Sumatra, specifically near the village of Tongging. Its name comes from the Batak language and means "like a knife," referring to the sharp and powerful way the water plunges from the cliff. The water originates from an underground river in the Karo Plateau, emerging from a cave on the caldera rim before cascading into Lake Toba.

Rumah Bolon

A Rumah Bolon is the traditional house of the Batak Toba tribe in North Sumatra. It is a stilted structure with a distinctive saddle-shaped roof, traditionally built with nailless wood and decorated with carvings (gorga). Historically, it housed extended families, reflecting local culture and wisdom. Elevated on wooden pillars, often using the space underneath for livestock, its curved roof, traditionally made of palm fiber, symbolizes Batak cultural heritage. The interior, generally without permanent partitions, is divided into functional areas for the leader, family gatherings, and the kitchen. Constructed with natural materials—wood, carved panels, and coconut fiber or rumbia roofing—the entrance is built lower to require bowing as a sign of respect, while the rear is built higher, symbolizing that the new generation must surpass the previous one. In front of the house are the “alaman” (common space for ceremonies) and the “sapo” (rice granary). Today, these houses are an important symbol of Batak heritage and are preserved in places like Samosir Island and Medan.
