Sukhothai

Sukhothai is a historic city in north-central Thailand and one of the country's most important sites for understanding the origins of Thai culture and the Thai state . It was the first capital of the Kingdom of Siam in the 13th century and today is a key destination for those seeking heritage, archaeology, and a serene atmosphere , quite different from that of large modern cities.

The main attraction is the Sukhothai Historical Park , a UNESCO World Heritage Site, where the ruins of the ancient capital are preserved. Within a vast enclosure surrounded by lakes and moats stand temples, stupas, and Buddha statues that represent the refined Sukhothai artistic style , considered one of the most elegant in Southeast Asia. Highlights include Wat Mahathat , the spiritual heart of the ancient kingdom; Wat Si Chum , famous for its monumental seated Buddha; and Wat Sa Si , especially photogenic due to its location among water lilies.

Sukhothai is divided into two main areas : the modern, functional, and tranquil city , and the historic park area, where the pace is leisurely and the surroundings invite exploration on foot or by bicycle. This separation allows visitors to enjoy the heritage at a relaxed pace, away from the urban bustle. At dawn and dusk, the park offers one of Thailand's most evocative experiences, bathed in soft light and with few other visitors.

Beyond the main park, the region includes other archaeological sites such as Si Satchanalai , less visited and surrounded by forest, which complete the picture of the ancient kingdom. The rural setting, with its rice paddies and small villages, reinforces the historical and natural character of the destination.

The local cuisine is simple and authentic, featuring traditional dishes from north-central Thailand and tranquil markets. Accommodation is typically boutique or in small resorts, focused on relaxation and cultural exploration. Sukhothai is well-connected by plane, bus, and train (via Phitsanulok), making it easily accessible without sacrificing its peaceful atmosphere.

Visiting Sukhothai is like traveling to the very foundations of Thailand , where its writing, art, and spiritual identity were forged. It's an ideal destination for those seeking profound history, harmonious landscapes, and a relaxed pace of life , and one of the country's most essential cultural experiences.

It receives thousands of visitors a year who marvel at the ancient Buddha figures, palace buildings and temples.

Wat Sri Chum

It is a complex built at the end of the 13th century by King Maha Tammaracha II. Its name means "Temple of the Tree of Enlightenment" and its main attraction is the most famous Buddha image in Sukhothai, measuring 15 meters high by 12 meters wide, white in color and in a very good state of preservation.
