Due to its importance, the Emirate of Sharjah ranks third. Here, too, skyscrapers have been built en masse.
The city of Sharjah, located on the Persian Gulf, has focused its tourism industry on being a seaside resort. In 1998, UNESCO named it the Arab Capital of Culture thanks to the revitalization of its historic center, transformed into an "arts district." This city boasts nearly 20 museums that welcome visitors with coffee and dates. Among them are the Heritage Museum, the Islamic Museum, the Museum of Arabic Calligraphy, the Goldsmithing Museum, the Museum of Costume and Cosmetics, the Gambling Museum, and the Maritime Museum. The Al Shuwaiheen district, the arts district, brings together cultural establishments, art galleries, and the Sharjah Art Museum, with its collection of beautiful works. This neighborhood is home to a major contemporary art biennial. Of course, opposite the artificial Khaled Lagoon, there's a modern mega-shopping mall, next to the King Faizal Mosque. And on the outskirts of the city, Desert Park is a natural history museum.
