It is the largest port city in central and southern Vietnam on the coast of the China Sea. Historically, during the Vietnam War, it was the landing site of the first contingent of Marines in 1965 and the main United States air base with the capacity to unload 27,000 tons of supplies per day. Today it is a city with wide beaches, fantastic street food, a growing collection of cafes, restaurants and bars. Some of the best luxury resorts in the country are located here. Its old town, with its overflowing markets and silent pagodas, continues to function, just a few streets away from the hipster cafes and designer boutiques.
Of its tourist attractions, we highlight:
- Hai Van Pass: It is a mountain pass approximately 21 kilometers long, which crosses a spur of the Anamite Mountain Range and enters the Sea of Eastern Vietnam. It had great strategic importance since for a long time it represented a barrier for any land army that tried to move between the northern and central regions of the country. In addition to its beauty, the pass is also famous for its difficulty, visibility is often reduced by mists rising from the sea.
- My Khe Beach: The warm sands of this beach extend south from the mountainous Son Tra peninsula. The inhabitants of Da Nang turn a large part of the beach into their playground, gym and source of livelihood. The stretch of sandy beach, lined with new hotels, seafood restaurants and fishing boats, leads the eye to where the statue of Linh Ung stands serenely overlooking the waves.
- Marble Mountains: Located between Hoi an and Da Nang, they are made up of five mountains whose names represent the five elements: Thuy Son (water), Hoa Son (fire), Kim Son (metal ), Moc Son (wood) and Tho Son (earth). According to an ancient Cham legend, one day a fisherman was fishing on the shores of the China Sea, suddenly a dragon appeared to him coming to lay an egg and later, the God Kim Quy emerged from the waters in the form of a golden turtle and entrusted him with the mission of protecting the dragon egg at all costs. The fisherman buried the egg until it burst into five pieces, forming the five mountains. The largest, most famous and most visited is Thuy Son, as it houses several caves, pagodas and the occasional viewpoint.
- Ba Na Hills: One of the biggest tourist attractions in Vietnam (most visited place in the country in 2019 and 2020), for being impressive and for having something that is not found anywhere else in the world, the bridge of the hands of God. To reach the top of the summit, there is a cable car, which until 2010 was recorded in the Guinness Book of Records as the longest (5,042 meters) and highest (1,291 meters) in the world. In addition to the cable car, there is an entertainment complex and a hotel.
- Ling Ung Pagoda: It is one of the Buddhist centers of the city.
