How does the JR PASS work?

  • You must purchase a Japan Rail Pass before starting your trip.
  • Customers must activate the Japan Rail Pass and make their own train reservations.
  • Once the voucher is activated, customers can reserve their desired train.
  • Train reservations are subject to availability. It is recommended that you book as early as possible to get the train you want.
  • If you cannot reserve a seat, you can travel without a reserved seat, but you will most likely have to stand.
  • The bullet train does not have a designated space for large suitcases. Carry-on luggage (cabin-sized suitcases) can be stored in the overhead compartment.
  • The JR PASS is valid on all Japan Railways (JR) trains throughout Japan (with the exception of some high-speed trains, including the Nozomi bullet train). It does not cover routes on other local rail companies or subways.
  • The JR PASS must be used on consecutive days, depending on the duration contracted.

Very important note regarding prices:

The JR PASS does not have a fixed price; prices fluctuate at the same rate as the Japanese Yen. The price included in the contracted program is indicative; the final price will be communicated by Japan Railways at the time of purchasing the package.
