Ueno District

Ueno is a traditional neighborhood known for its ornate temples, such as the 17th-century temple dedicated to the goddess Benten, which stands on an island in Ueno Park. It is one of Tokyo's most vibrant cultural and historical districts, located in the Taito Ward. It is famous for housing Ueno Park, Japan's first public park, which boasts a high concentration of world-class museums, ancient temples, and the country's oldest zoo.

Within this green space are several cultural venues, such as the Tokyo National Museum, which displays Japanese antiquities, and the National Museum of Western Art, with works by modern masters like Van Gogh and Picasso. Nearby is the Ameya-Yokocho open-air market, selling a vast array of food, clothing, and accessories.

What to see in Ueno District?

Toshogu Shrine

Toshogu Shrine

The Ueno Shrine in Tokyo, located within Ueno Park, is a treasure from the Edo period (1603-1867) dedicated to Tokugawa Ieyasu. It is famous for its gilded facade, intricate wood carvings, and the Karamon Gate. Known for surviving wars and earthquakes, it offers a free historical oasis (entrance to the grounds) that includes the Botan-en peony garden. Highlights include its original Sukibei walls, the gilded Karamon Gate, and over 50 bronze and stone lanterns donated by daimyo (feudal lords).
Shinobazu Pond

Shinobazu Pond

Shinobazu Pond is a large, natural freshwater pond located at the southern end of Ueno Park in Tokyo. It is famous for its dense covering of lotus flowers in summer and for the octagonal Bentendo Temple, located on a small island in its center. The pond is physically divided into three distinct areas, each with a different purpose and atmosphere: Lotus Pond (Hasu-ike): In the summer months (July and August), this section is completely covered with large pink and green lotus flowers. Boat Pond (Boto-ike): In this area, visitors can rent rowboats, pedal boats, or the iconic swan-shaped boats to navigate the water. Cormorant Pond (Uno-ike): Located within the boundaries of Ueno Zoo, it is a haven for various water birds, including cormorants and rare species such as the Madagascar ibis.
