It is a small protected natural area. It is located in the central part of Kenya, north of the Ewaso Ng'iro River, and includes the Koitogor and Ololokwe mountains. It covers an area of 168 square kilometers. It forms a system along with three adjacent parks: Buffalo Springs National Reserve, Laikipia, and Shaba National Reserve. The reserve is located north of the equator, in Samburu County. The name comes from the ethnic group that inhabits the territory, directly related to another Nilotic people, the Maasai. However, in its reduced size, the park includes various habitats, at altitudes between 800 (in the vicinity of Ewaso Ng'iro) and 1,230 (on Mount Koitogor) meters above sea level. It includes riverine forest, Doum palm and acacia forest, and three types of savannah: wooded, shrubby, and flat. The fauna includes elephants, cape buffaloes, Grévy's zebras, numerous species of gazelles, impalas, waterbucks, oryx, cheetahs, leopards, lions, crocodiles, hippos, a large number of bird species, three of which are typically northern: the antelope giraffe or gerenuc, and the reticulated giraffe. The park has few communication routes and low population density, which makes it very suitable for wildlife.
