Namib Desert

Namib means "huge" in the Nama language. The Namib is considered the oldest desert in the world and there is evidence that it already existed during the Tertiary Era. It is known basically for the impressive dunes of Sossusvlei, which are the highest in the world and kilometers of sand with unusual reddish tones, these elements are the protagonists of the desert. A special place with a unique and unrepeatable landscape that transports you to a distant planet, one of the few places in the world where you can be completely alone for many kilometers around. A unique place, which joins the sea, and which runs parallel to the coastline of the Atlantic Ocean, whose northernmost part is called the Skeleton Coast, due to the large number of shipwrecks that have occurred in its waters and whale skeletons that can be seen from the air.

What to see in Namib Desert?

Twyfelfontein rock carvings

One of the largest concentrations of petroglyphs on the entire African continent can be found here. Most of them are in a good state of preservation and depict rhinoceroses, elephants, ostriches and giraffes, as well as footprints of men and animals. The site also has six rock shelters decorated with red ochre paintings depicting human figures. The remains found in the two areas of the site date back to the end of the Stone Age. The site forms a coherent ensemble of great size and quality, attesting to the ritual practices of hunter-gatherer populations in this region of Southern Africa for at least twenty centuries. These engravings mainly depict animals, such as ostriches, rhinoceroses, giraffes and elephants; there are also animal footprints and a few human figures.

Walvis Bay

The bay is famous for its spectacular landscapes, where desert dunes meet the Atlantic Ocean, creating a stunning visual contrast. Here, you can enjoy activities such as kayaking, boat trips and bird watching, where you will have the opportunity to observe flamingos, pelicans and other marine species in their natural habitat such as dolphins and sea lions. In addition, Walvis Bay is an excellent starting point to explore the Namib-Naukluft National Park and the dunes, famous for being the highest in the world. The experience of watching the sunrise or sunset over the desert is simply magical. The town of Walvis Bay also offers a variety of restaurants and cafes where you can taste fresh seafood and enjoy local hospitality.
