Located in a privileged enclave, Cyangugu, also known as Ciangugu or "Shangugu", is a city in southwestern Rwanda, part of the Western Province, next to the border with the Democratic Republic of the Congo, at the southern end of Lake Kivu and at the gateway to one of the oldest original forests in Africa, the Nyungwe Forest. It is separated from the Democratic Republic of the Congo by the Ruzizi River, which is crossed in the city by two bridges. The settlement has two main areas: Cyangugu itself, the district with a low population density on the shores of the lake, and Kamembe, which concentrates industry and transportation to the north of the city.Like Gisenyi, Cyangugu has grown contiguous to another Congolese city: Bukavu. From its shores, we can admire the immensity of Kivu, the silhouettes of the volcanoes that make up the Virunga mountain range, and we can embark on a trip to the beautiful Ndaba Cathars.
