Murchison Falls Area

The Murchison Falls area is one of Uganda 's most spectacular natural destinations, located within Murchison Falls National Park in the northwest of the country. This area is famous for being home to one of Africa's most powerful waterfalls, where the Nile River narrows and plunges with great force through a narrow gorge before spreading out onto a wide plain.

The main attraction of the area is the breathtaking Murchison Falls , where the water plunges from a height of over 40 meters after passing through a gorge barely 7 meters wide. This natural spectacle offers panoramic viewpoints and hiking trails that allow visitors to closely observe the power of the Nile, making it one of Uganda 's most iconic landscapes.

Murchison Falls is also renowned for the park's rich wildlife, home to elephants, lions, giraffes, buffalo, and hippos, as well as a wide variety of birds. Land safaris and Nile River cruises are must-do activities, especially along the stretch near the falls, where it's possible to observe animals in their natural habitat.

Thanks to its combination of landscapes, biodiversity, and unique experiences, Murchison Falls can be complemented by visits to nearby places such as Budongo Forest or Murchison Falls National Park itself. Its scenic beauty and ecological importance make it an essential stop on any trip to Uganda .

What to see in Murchison Falls Area?

Murchison Falls

The Murchison Falls, located in Uganda, were discovered in 1864 and are one of the main attractions of the White Nile. Lake Victoria, shared by Kenya, Uganda and Tanzania, is one of the main sources of water for the White Nile. The Murchison Falls have a drop of 43 metres from their source in Lake Victoria to their mouth in the White Nile. The journey ends with a violent waterfall that sometimes rips rocks from the bottom of the waterfall. It is also called “the devil's cauldron”, as it is considered to be the most powerful waterfall in the world.

Murchison Falls National Park

A protected area located in northern western Uganda, extending inland from the shores of Lake Albert around the White Nile. The park is named after the Murchison Falls, which were named after a president of the Royal Geographical Society. The park is known for its flora and fauna which has partly recovered from a massacre by poachers and troops under the leadership of Idi Amin. Together with the adjacent 748 square kilometres of the Bugungu Wildlife Reserve and the 720 square kilometres of the Karuma Wildlife Reserve, the park constitutes the Murchison Falls Conservation Area.
