What to see in Murchison Falls Area?
Murchison Falls
The Murchison Falls, located in Uganda, were discovered in 1864 and are one of the main attractions of the White Nile. Lake Victoria, shared by Kenya, Uganda and Tanzania, is one of the main sources of water for the White Nile. The Murchison Falls have a drop of 43 metres from their source in Lake Victoria to their mouth in the White Nile. The journey ends with a violent waterfall that sometimes rips rocks from the bottom of the waterfall. It is also called “the devil's cauldron”, as it is considered to be the most powerful waterfall in the world.
Murchison Falls National Park
A protected area located in northern western Uganda, extending inland from the shores of Lake Albert around the White Nile. The park is named after the Murchison Falls, which were named after a president of the Royal Geographical Society. The park is known for its flora and fauna which has partly recovered from a massacre by poachers and troops under the leadership of Idi Amin. Together with the adjacent 748 square kilometres of the Bugungu Wildlife Reserve and the 720 square kilometres of the Karuma Wildlife Reserve, the park constitutes the Murchison Falls Conservation Area.
