The best plans to discover Samosir Island (Lake Toba)
What to see in Samosir Island (Lake Toba)?
Sanggala Tree
Known as Tarra trees, these trees are the protagonists of a unique ancestral funerary ritual reserved exclusively for babies who die before teething. The ceremony involves carving a hollow in the living trunk where the body is placed in a fetal position, wrapped in cloth. The opening is then sealed with plant fibers, an act laden with symbolism. The Toraja people believe that the tree's whitish sap acts as a spiritual breast milk and that, over time, the trunk's own growth envelops the child, integrating it into nature so that its soul can continue its journey in harmony with the environment.
