This city was one of the ancient capitals of Sri Lanka and the seat of the Sinhalese kings from the 11th century to the 13th century. It was declared a World Heritage Site by UNESCO in 1982. It presents numerous well-preserved monuments, generally with an architectural style of Indian influence. Most of the monuments are religious, although civil buildings, such as the Royal Council Chamber, are also preserved. It is surrounded by an artificial long built by King Prarakamabahu in the 12th century. It is home to the Quadrangle, a large complex of ancient buildings that includes Vatadage, Thurapama, Hetadage and Atadage.
