What to see in Zagora?
Tamegroute Library
The town of Tamegroute is located about 20 kilometres from Zagora. Its library or Zaouia was built in the 17th century by Mohamed Ben Nacer and later, his son Ahmed collected more than 40,000 books. Today, its display cases contain more than 4,000 documents of all kinds, from translations of Pythagoras to treatises on all sciences. It also houses ancient religious manuscripts, some of which date back to the 13th century, and a Koran written on gazelle skin from the 11th century. The dry climate of the place helps preserve the copies. Taking photos inside is strictly prohibited.
