It is a small city that was once the Roman city of Tisdra (in Berber, crossroads), it was built, like most Roman settlements in Tunisia, on a Punic settlement. It was the seat of a Christian diocese, as demonstrated by the fact that its name is preserved within the list of titular sees that the Catholic Church assigns to its auxiliary bishops. It rivaled Carthage for being the second most important Roman city in North Africa. It is home to one of the most impressive Roman remains in Africa, the world-famous El Djem Amphitheater.
