Volcanoes National Park
Located in northwestern Rwanda, it borders Virunga National Park in the Democratic Republic of the Congo and Mgahinga Gorilla National Park in Uganda. Volcanoes National Park is known as a refuge for mountain gorillas. It is home to five of the eight volcanoes in the Virunga Range (Karisimbi, Bisoke, Muhabura, Gahinga, and Sabyinyo), which are covered in forest and bamboo. The park was created in 1925 as a small area bordered by Karisimbi, Visoke, and Mikeno, intended to protect the gorillas from poachers. It was the first national park created in Africa and the basis of the famous zoologist Dian Fossey. Later, in 1929, the park's boundaries were expanded into Rwanda and the Belgian Congo to form Albert National Park.
