Cuzco

It is a city in southeastern Peru located on the eastern slope of the Andes mountain range. It is declared “Historical Capital of the country” in the Peruvian Constitution. It was the capital of the Inca Empire and one of the most important cities of the viceroyalty of Peru. Under the sovereignty of the Spanish crown, various churches, universities, palaces and baroque and neoclassical squares were built, which are attractions that make the city the main tourist destination in the country and that it is called the “Rome of America.” It was declared a National Historical Monument in 1972 and a World Heritage Site in 1983 by UNESCO.

What to see in Cuzco?

Coriancha and Santo Domingo Convent

Plaza de Armas of Cusco

It was the scene of several important events in the history of the city, such as the proclamation of the country's independence, by the Ángulo brothers in 1814. The Spaniards built this square with Cuzco labor, which after several reconstructions lasts until the present. There are the Cathedral of Cusco and the temple of La Compañía de Jesús, built on ancient Inca buildings. In the central part there is a pool crowned by the effigy of an Inca. It is the scene of the city's most important celebrations and civic actions.

Cuzco Cathedral

It was built between 1560 and 1664 on the Sunturwasi (House of the Condor). For this, stone was used as the main material, extracted from Inca buildings that served as nearby quarries and blocks of red granite brought from the Inca complex Sacsayhuamán. This large cathedral, with a Renaissance plan, presents late-Gothic, baroque and plateresque interiors. It has one of the most outstanding examples of colonial goldsmithing and carved wooden altars. In this city, painting on canvas was developed in the so-called “Cusqueña School of Painting” and, precisely in the cathedral, you can see important samples of local artists of the time. It is the headquarters of the Archdiocese of Cuzco. It preserves an ovoid-shaped monolith, which represents the Inca god Viracocha.

Sacsayhuamán Fortress

It is an Inca ceremonial temple located 2 kilometers north of Cusco that began construction in the 15th century and was completed in the 16th century. From here you have a unique panoramic view of the surroundings, including the city of Cusco. The area where this construction is located corresponds to the shape of the head of a sacred animal, and one of the translations that has its name is, precisely, puma head. The space covered by its buildings is particularly large; What is most striking are the 3 stone walls that suggest the figure of the fortress.

Qenqo

It is an archaeological complex of 3,500 square meters located about 4 kilometers northeast of Cusco in what is known today as Cerro Socorro. What remains of the complex today are carved rocks that could not be destroyed by the Spanish. The translation of its name into Spanish would be “Labyrinth” alluding to the tunnels, passages and underground channels that were housed in this place. There were very important sanctuaries for the Incas here. Despite the destruction it suffered during the colony, what can currently be seen inside it is still impressive and colossal.
