Lima

It is the capital and most populated city of Peru. It is located on the central coast of the country, on the shores of the Pacific Ocean. Currently, it is considered the political, economic, industrial, cultural, financial and commercial center of the country, and the gastronomic capital of South America. Internationally, it is the fifth largest city in Latin America and one of the 30 most populated cities in the world. It was founded in 1535 by the Spanish conquistador Francisco Pizarro. In October 2013, it was chosen to host the 2019 Pan American Games. It also hosted the UN Climate Change Conference in the 2014 edition. As the main entry point to the country, it has developed a significant tourism industry, among which its historic center, declared a World Heritage Site by UNESCO in 1988, its archaeological centers, its nightlife, its museums and art galleries stand out. It has exclusive beaches located on the Pan-American Highway.

What to see in Lima?

Plaza Mayor or Plaza de Armas of Lima

It is the founding site of the city of Lima, the main public space of the city, located in the historic center. Around it stand the Government Palace of Peru, the Cathedral, the Sagrario Church, the Archbishop's Palace of Lima, the Municipal Palace of Lima and the Union Club. In 1821, José de San Martín proclaimed the Independence of Peru in this square, carrying the country's new flag.

Lima cathedral

Its construction began in 1535, finished in 1538 and was inaugurated in 1540. The earthquake of 1940 caused considerable damage, for this reason, a total restoration work was undertaken. It is the main church of Peru. It is located in the historic center of the city. Its façade is in Renaissance style with Plateresque ornaments and statues of the Apostles. Its tall towers with slate spires are neoclassical. It is a perfect synthesis of the architectural styles that developed in the city from its origins to the present day. It was declared a World Cultural Heritage Site in 1991. In 2005, new lighting was installed that enhances the beauty of its façade at night.

Historic Center of Lima

It was founded by the Spanish conquistador Francisco Pizarro in January 1535. Despite the serious damage suffered by earthquakes, it has numerous architectural monuments. Due to this historical wealth, it was declared a World Heritage Site by UNESCO in 1988.

Larco Museum

Its permanent exhibition was created to help understand the fascinating history of ancient Peru. It also has a collection of miniseries, small audiovisual episodes with universal themes such as the importance of water, pre-Columbian cultures, the gold and silver ornaments housed in the museum, etc.

Aliaga House

It is a colonial-style building built on a huaca located in the historic center. The building dates back to May 1536 and belonged to Don Jerónimo de Aliaga y Ramírez. It was destroyed by the Lima earthquake of 1746 and rebuilt by Juan José Aliaga y Sotomayor. It has 18 rooms and real estate from the time.
