Aguas Calientes, Perú

It is a town whose real name is Machu Picchu Pueblo to differentiate it from the archaeological zone, Aguas Calientes being the name of the river that is in the middle of the town. It is located at an altitude of 2,040 meters and 9 kilometers from the Historical Sanctuary of Machu Picchu, being the main access route to it. It is surrounded by granite mountains covered with abundant vegetation typical of the high jungle region. Its origins date back to 1901, the year in which construction of the railroad began to link Cuzco and Santa Ana. The town has developed an important tourist and hotel infrastructure.
