Useful information for traveling to Egypt

A passport is required for all visitors. For Spanish citizens, the minimum validity is 6 months (for other nationalities, please consult the relevant authorities for entry requirements).


Visa required:

Until July 31, 2026, visas are obtained at the airport upon arrival, at an approximate cost of €35.

From August 1, 2026, Egyptian authorities will implement a new visa issuance system using QR codes, replacing the current sticker visa system. In this initial phase, the new procedure will be applied exclusively at Cairo International Airport. In the rest of Egypt's international airports, such as Luxor, Aswan, Hurghada, and Sharm El Sheikh, the visa issuance system will continue to operate as before. Main Changes: The visa fee will be €35. The visa will be valid for 48 hours from the time of issue and must be used within that time. During this initial phase, prepaid visas processed through your travel agency will continue to be available. Payment Method: Visa payments must be made directly at the kiosks located in the airport using a bank card authorized for international purchases. The amount will be charged in US dollars (USD) and, if the card is associated with another currency, the conversion will be done automatically by the issuing bank.

The official language is Arabic, but most Egyptians are fluent in English and French as it is studied in schools.

The official religion is Sunni Islam to which 85% of the population belongs, 10% are Coptic Christians and the remaining 5% correspond to other Christian religious minorities.

The official currency is the Egyptian Pound (LE). €1 Equivalent to approximately LE 32.50. It is possible to exchange currency in banks and hotels.

The electric current is the same as in Spain, 220 V. The plugs are two-pin and round.

Very hot in summer and mild in winter. In Upper Egypt, very dry. Summer runs from mid-March to early December and winter from December to March. Sometimes during the spring the action of winds typical of the area and/or sand storms can affect the schedules and on some occasions the diversion of planes to other airports.

It is very varied, as it receives influences from Mediterranean and African cuisines. In Egypt they eat a lot fresh fish from the Mediterranean Sea and hardly any meat, only lamb roasted, stewed or cooked. The fruit is very abundant, especially citrus fruits, and many types of bread are made with different kinds of flour.


The main dishes are, among others, the "ful medammes ”, composed of boiled broad beans, “molokheya”, a soup made with chicken meat and various spices, and “kushari”, a legume stew.


As for  Desserts are very similar to Middle Eastern desserts. We highlight the "loukoum", a sweet fried bread covered in syrup or honey with cinnamon, and the "baklava", a crushed walnut cake, bathed in honey or syrup, which can be decorated with hazelnuts or almonds. The date is widely used to make desserts, especially to cook the "meneas", some pasta balls stuffed with dates.

It is recommended not to drink any liquid that is not bottled. Outside of hotels or restaurants, it is recommended not to eat unpeeled fruit, raw vegetables, ice cream and very cold drinks. Although the most appetizing after a hot visit is an iced drink, it is preferable to drink hot or not so cold drinks that help to gradually restore body temperature. It is advisable to brush your teeth with bottled water and not drink shower water. It is advisable to bring some medicine against intestinal infections, fever, colds, as well as a sun cream with a high protection factor and mosquito repellent.
