“Place where water boils.” Atotonilco is a town that is part of the municipality of San Miguel de Allende in the Mexican state of Guanajuato. It is known worldwide for having participated in the history of the Independence of Mexico, when the priest Miguel Hidalgo, took a banner with the image of the Virgin of Guadalupe as the flag of the insurgent army. Known as the Sistine Chapel of Mexico, this vitally important church in the village of Atotonilco, 11 km north of San Miguel, is defined by its connection with the independence struggle, which has made it an important icon for Mexicans.
