What to see in Mexico City?

National Palace Mexico City

It is the headquarters of the Federal Executive Branch of Mexico, it is located in the Plaza de la Constitución in the Historic Center of the city and built on an area of 40,000 square meters. Being part of the aforementioned architectural complex in that area of the city, it has consequently been a World Heritage Site since 1987. Its construction began in 1522, as the second private residence of Hernán Cortés. It suffered a major fire, was semi-demolished in 1692 and later rebuilt by the viceregal authorities. As of July 2019, it once again served as the residence of the president of the republic. For almost 500 years, this construction has had a large number of extensions and modifications in which the traces of the different governments that the country has had have been reflected. In its construction you can find neoclassical, baroque and neocolonial elements. It has permanently been the scene of official, protocol and civic events of the Presidency of the Republic, such as the reception of heads of state and foreign governments. It houses a valuable historical-artistic heritage, highlighting the set of murals by Diego Rivera.

Metropolitan Cathedral of Mexico City

It is located on the north side of the Plaza de la Constitución in the Historic Center of the city. Being part of the aforementioned architectural complex in that area of the city, it has consequently been a World Heritage Site since 1987. Its works began in 1573 and were completed inside in 1667 and outside in 1813. It is built on an area of 7,752 meters squares. It is one of the most outstanding works of Latin American architecture. Due to the long time it took to build, it integrates various architectural styles such as Gothic, Baroque, Churrigueresque, Neoclassical, among others. Inside, two large altars stand out, the sacristy and the choir. It has two bell towers that currently contain 35 bells. Under the building there is a crypt in which the remains of some archbishops of Mexico rest.

Templo Mayor Museum

It is located in the Historic Center of the city. The objective of this museum is to present the finds found in the framework of the investigation of the archaeological zone of the Great Temple of the Aztecs. It was inaugurated in 1987. It houses the enormous monolith of the goddess of the moon (Coyolxauhqui). It is divided into 8 thematic rooms.

Anthropology National Museum

It is one of the most important and largest museum venues in Mexico and America, attracting more than 2,000,000 visitors every year. It is designed to house and exhibit the archaeological legacy of the peoples of Mesoamerica, as well as to account for the current ethnic diversity of the country. It was built between 1963 and 1964 in the Chapultepec forest and inaugurated on September 17, 1964. It currently has 22 permanent exhibition rooms, 2 temporary exhibition rooms and 3 auditoriums. Inside is the National Library of Anthropology and History. Its collection is made up of numerous archaeological and ethnographic pieces from all over Mexico. Among some of its most emblematic pieces is the Stone of the Sun (which is the heart of the museum), the colossal heads of the Olmec culture, the monumental Teotihuacan sculptures dedicated to the water gods, the tomb of Pakal, the funerary offerings of Monte Albán, the steles of Xochicalco, a Toltec Atlantean brought from Tollan-Xicocotitlan and the Tláloc Monolith, which guards the museum.

Frida Kahlo Museum

The Frida Kahlo Museum is the most representative cultural venue of the Mexican artist, as well as the container of a significant part of her artistic and conceptual legacy. It is a house museum located in the Colonia Del Carmen of the Coyoacán Mayor's Office, which corresponds to one of the most traditional and beautiful neighborhoods in Mexico City. A few blocks from the Museum, you will find the center of Coyoacán. Known as "The Blue House", this house-museum is the intimate universe of Frida Kahlo. She spent most of her life here, first with her family, and years later, alongside Diego Rivera. Frida and Diego wanted to leave their house as a museum for all visitors to enjoy. Since its inauguration in July 1958, the Blue House and its gardens have exhibited personal objects and paintings of both artists, popular art, pre-Columbian sculptures, photographs, documents, books and furniture that formed the environment that inspired Frida to create.
