Kumamoto

Located on the island of Kyushu, Kumamoto is especially known for its magnificent castle and its proximity to Mount Aso, an active volcano, which is why the entire region is nicknamed "Land of Fire." The city blends a deep samurai heritage with a remarkable recovery following the 2016 earthquakes.

Special mention must be made of its gastronomy; Kumamoto's cuisine is distinctive and an essential part of the tourist experience. Examples include Basashi (horse sashimi, the region's most famous specialty, prized for its lean, protein-rich meat), Kumamoto Ramen (characterized by a milder pork broth than that of other regions, often enriched with fried garlic or black garlic oil), and Karashi Renkon (lotus root stuffed with a spicy mustard and miso mixture, then fried in tempura batter).

What to see in Kumamoto?

Kumamoto castle

Kumamoto Castle is one of Japan's three most important and spectacular castles, along with Himeji and Matsumoto. Originally built in 1607 by the feudal lord Katō Kiyomasa, it is a symbol of resilience due to its imposing military architecture and its recent restoration following the devastating 2016 earthquake (a special elevated walkway allows visitors to closely observe the reconstruction work without interfering with the construction)..It is famous for its curved stone walls, called musha-gaeshi, specifically designed to prevent enemies from scaling them. The complex features a six-story main keep (Daitenshu) and a smaller auxiliary keep (Shotenshu). The grounds are home to approximately 800 cherry trees, making it a prime destination during sakura (cherry blossom) season between late March and early April.

Mount Aso

Mount Aso, located in the heart of Kumamoto Prefecture on the island of Kyushu, is one of Japan's most impressive and active volcanoes. With a caldera over 25 km in diameter—one of the largest in the world—and a unique volcanic landscape, Mount Aso offers a spectacular natural experience. Inside is the still-active Nakadake Crater, which can be visited when conditions permit. From nearby viewing points, visitors can observe the smoke emanating from the crater and the turquoise sulfurous waters forming within. Surrounded by vast grasslands, forests, and farmland, Aso-Kujū National Park offers a variety of outdoor activities, including hiking, horseback riding, and biking. It is an ideal destination for both nature lovers and those seeking to explore the country's volcanic geography. The region also boasts traditional villages, ryokan-style accommodations, hot springs (onsen), and high-quality local produce, making Aso a perfect getaway to connect with the most rural and authentic parts of Japan.

Daikanbo Viewpoint

The Daikanbō Observation Deck, located north of Mount Aso, is one of the most spectacular vantage points in the region. From here, you get a 360° view of the gigantic Aso caldera, the surrounding mountains, and the area's distinctive rolling landscape. On clear days, the view from Daikanbō is truly breathtaking: you can clearly see the five peaks of Mount Aso aligned on the horizon, known as the "Sleeping Buddha" because of their shape. The vastness of the volcanic landscape, combined with the green fields and open sky, make it one of the best photography spots in Kyushu. The observation deck has road access, free parking, a small souvenir shop, and a café. It's a perfect stop during a road trip through Aso-Kujū National Park.

Tsuetate Onsen

Tsuetate Onsen is a charming hot spring town located in the mountains of Kumamoto Prefecture, near the border with Ōita. With over 1,800 years of history, this onsen is known for its nostalgic atmosphere, healing waters, and authentic Japanese atmosphere. Stretching along a narrow river valley, the town features old ryokan (traditional inns), public baths, and wooden bridges that preserve the charm of Japan's past. The retro architecture and tranquility of the place make it a perfect destination for those seeking a relaxing experience away from mass tourism. Tsuetate's hot springs are rich in minerals and are said to be especially beneficial for relieving stress, fatigue, and skin problems. In addition, during the winter, the hot steam rising between the streets creates a unique and photogenic landscape. One of its most unusual attractions is the "Koinobori Festival" in spring, when thousands of colorful carp hang over the river to celebrate Children's Day, creating an unforgettable image.

Nakadeke Crater

Nakadake Crater is the most famous and active of the five peaks that make up Mount Aso, one of the largest volcanoes in the world. Located in the center of the Aso Caldera in Kumamoto Prefecture, this crater offers a unique volcanic experience that very few places in the world can match. When safety conditions permit, visitors can approach the crater's rims and observe directly inside the volcano, where a steaming turquoise lake forms surrounded by volcanic walls. The steam, sulfurous gases, and constantly changing landscape make for a striking and memorable scene. The area is equipped with trails, observation platforms, and parking, and can be accessed by car, bus, or even on foot from the nearby Kusasenrigahama Grassland. It is important to note that access to the crater may be temporarily closed due to volcanic activity or weather conditions. Visiting Nakadake Crater is a must-do experience for nature and geology lovers, and an exciting way to experience the planet's lifeblood up close.

Kusaserigahama Meadow

Kusasenrigahama Grassland (also known as Kusasenri) is one of the most iconic landscapes in the Mount Aso area of Kumamoto Prefecture. It's a vast green plain located within the volcano's gigantic caldera, formed by ancient craters now covered in grass. Surrounded by volcanic mountains and often shrouded in mist, Kusasenrigahama offers stunning natural scenery at any time of year. In spring and summer, the grassland is tinged with deep green; in autumn, golden hues blanket the hills; and in winter, it can be partially covered in snow, creating an almost magical atmosphere. It's a great place for walking, taking photographs, horseback riding, or simply relaxing and enjoying the fresh air. Two small volcanic lakes reflect the sky and mountains, and the constant smoke from the nearby Nakadake Crater is a reminder that you're in one of the most active volcanic areas in the country. Nearby is the Aso Volcano Museum, which offers information on the region's geology and provides easy access to hiking trails.
